General Knowledge, Combination Vehicle & Air Brakes CDL Practice Tests

There are three essential CDL practice tests drivers should use when preparing to earn their Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL):

Preparing for the Virginia CDL (Manuals & Practice Tests)

CDL requirements in Virginia follow federal standards established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Licensing and testing are administered by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Drivers preparing for the Virginia CDL exam should review the official CDL manual:

This manual covers all CDL classifications, including:

  • Class A CDL
  • Class B CDL
  • Class C CDL

Virginia CDL Eligibility Requirements

Age Requirements:
You must be at least 18 years old to obtain a CDL for intrastate driving within Virginia.
You must be at least 21 years old to operate a commercial vehicle in interstate commerce.

Driver’s License

You must hold a valid Virginia driver’s license before applying for a CDL.

Medical Certification

All CDL applicants must:

  • Pass a DOT physical examination
  • Be evaluated by an FMCSA-certified medical examiner
  • Submit a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC)

This confirms you are medically qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle.

Knowledge Tests

You must pass written knowledge tests covering:

  • Combination vehicles (Class A)
  • Any endorsements you plan to add

Common endorsements include:

  • Hazardous Materials (H)
  • Tank Vehicles (N)
  • Passenger (P)
  • School Bus (S)

Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)

As of February 7, 2022, federal law requires Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for:

  • First-time CDL applicants
  • Drivers upgrading from Class B to Class A
  • Drivers adding a Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement
  • Drivers adding a Passenger (P) or School Bus (S) endorsement

ELDT includes classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training through a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.

CDL Training & Roehl Opportunities

While CDL training is not required by the state of Virginia, completing a structured training program can significantly improve your chances of passing the CDL exams.

Roehl Transport offers paid CDL training programs for qualified applicants. Although Roehl does not have a physical terminal in Virginia, the company hires Virginia residents and provides training opportunities through its nationwide network.

Roehl’s programs allow qualified drivers to earn their CDL while getting paid and begin a career with one of the nation’s leading trucking companies.

A criminal background check may be required, particularly for drivers applying for a Hazardous Materials (H) endorsement.
