Preparing for the Indiana CDL (Manual and Practice Tests):
The CDL requirements for Indiana are based on guidelines provided by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. However, each state provides its own CDL testing questions through the state specific Department of Transportation (DOT). State Specific CDL Eligibility Requirements for Indiana:
Age Requirement:
You must be at least 18 years old to obtain a CDL for intrastate (within Indiana ) driving.
You must be at least 21 years old for interstate (across state lines) driving.
Driver's License:
You need to have a valid Indiana driver's license.
Medical Certification:
You must pass a medical examination conducted by a certified medical examiner.

Individuals falling into the following categories (listed below) must successfully complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) before becoming eligible for CDL skills testing. Entry Level Driver Training involves both theoretical instruction and behind-the-wheel (BTW) training at a facility listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Training Provider Registry.
This requirement pertains to:
- First-time CDL applicants
- Those applying for Class Upgrades (from Class B to Class A)
- Individuals seeking to add a Hazardous Materials Endorsement (H)
- Individuals looking to add a Passenger Endorsement (P)
- Those intending to add a School Bus Endorsement (S)
Complete and Pass a Criminal Background Check:
You may be subject to a criminal background check as part of the CDL application process.
Proof of Identity, Residency, and Citizenship:
You will need to provide documentation as proof of your identity, residency in Indiana, and U.S. citizenship or legal presence.
