Catching Up with Roehl’s Tom Miller – A Million Safe Miles Later

Tom Miller joined Roehl Transport in 2016 through the company’s on-the-job CDL training program, and in 2018 his story was featured in some national trucking magazines

At that time, Tom shared how he got into trucking, and he articulated his aspirations by saying, “I want a million safe miles with Roehl, and I want to be Driver of the Year. I don’t want to start over with some other company.”

Since that article was published, Tom has certainly achieved his goals.

He drove his one millionth safe mile in 2024, joining hundreds of Roehl drivers with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and even 6 million safe miles with the company.

Along the way, Tom has earned Roehl’s Driver of the Year Award a remarkable six times in the last seven years – from 2018-2020 & 2022-2024 (in 2021, Tom earned an Outstanding Performance award).

Tom attributes his success to a number of factors – from the way he approaches his work to the relationships he’s built. “You have to set goals for yourself, and you have to let others know those goals so they can help you realize them,” he shared.

He also recognized that being willing to learn and admitting when you make a mistake has helped him grow. “I don’t want to let people down. I want to succeed. It’s how I was raised. You surround yourself with others who want to succeed, too. Roehl has the right people to make the company better and drivers better,” he stated.

Even though Tom has enjoyed considerable success with Roehl, he acknowledged that sometimes Roehl’s not the right company for some drivers. “It’s a hard pill to swallow when people say, ‘Roehl’s a starter company or you can’t make money at Roehl.’ We’re not just a training company. Look at all the drivers with 10, 20, even 40+ years with Roehl. And office people, too,” he added.

“From a small mom & pop trucking company to the largest trucking companies, it doesn’t matter what company you work for, there’s going to be things you don’t like. Roehl wants you to do things a certain way – it all comes back to safety. Three points of contact, that you are rested. If you take that as micromanagement, you’re missing something. That’s the company trying to help you be successful.” Roehl Transport is built on values, and Safety is the company's cornerstone value.

While Tom doesn’t want to let anyone down, he has similar feelings about CEO Rick Roehl, “I think Rick’s the same way. He doesn’t want to see anyone fail. If you sit down and talk to Rick, he listens and he remembers. Rick cares about his drivers and their success.”

Tom’s well known for keeping his truck clean and shiny – it’s something he takes great pride in. “Rick buys the best equipment that he can, and our equipment is excellent. Of course, things can happen, and if they do, our maintenance teammates go out of their way to help our drivers,” he added.

Despite his love of trucks, Tom doesn’t want to be an owner operator. “I’m happy being a company driver. Being an owner operator, it’d just be another thing for my wife, Marci, to take care of. She already does so much” he said.

Marci and Tom volunteer and support a number of organizations in North Carolina, like the Carolina Jeep Alliance, the Love Like Lauren Foundation, the Tyler Herndon Memorial Foundation and Mia Stokes Foundation. They’ve also supported teammates who needed help. “Roehl’s always been good to me. Giving back warms your heart,” he said.

It’s evident that Tom has a big heart and a work ethic to match. He takes pride in his truck, in his work, in his company, in his teammates and in his family.

When asked if Roehl lived up to the promises the company made when he joined back in 2016, Tom answered emphatically. “Absolutely. Roehl’s gone above and beyond. I’ve shown I want to do my job and do it the right way. I want to make sure that this truck and trailer are safe. So I can deliver my loads and get back to home.”

After achieving so many of his goals, he summed up where he’s headed next. “I want to be on the Mount Rushmore of Roehl drivers.”

Tom’s well on his way because he has consistently driven the Roehl to Protect Others and Delivered Success for Roehl’s customers.
