Company Driver vs. Owner-Operator: Which Path Is Right for You?
The Core Difference
As a company driver, you're an employee. You're paid through our Dynamic Pay Plan, we own the equipment, and we handle the business side including fuel programs, maintenance, insurance, and dispatch while you focus on driving.
As an Owner-Operator, you're leasing or running your own truck as a small business, partnering with Roehl for freight, support systems, and infrastructure.

When Company Driving Makes Sense
If you want to focus on driving while Roehl manages fuel programs, maintenance, insurance, and other business responsibilities, company driving may be a strong fit.
You're paid through our Dynamic Pay Plan with address-to-address practical route mileage, drive equipment that averages less than two years old, and choose from home time options including National Fleet, Regional, HOMEtime PLUS, and Home Daily schedules.
When Owner-Operator Makes Sense
Roehl's Business Owner Support System (B.O.S.S.) provides business ownership training, assistance with business structure, and ongoing support as you build your business.
The Earned Down Payment Program allows qualified drivers to enter ownership without cash up front. Once operating, there is no forced dispatch. You work with a business advisor to select loads that fit your business goals.
For drivers interested in business ownership as a future career step, that path can develop within Roehl. Some current Owner-Operators began as company drivers and transitioned into ownership when they were ready.
A Question Worth Asking Yourself
The clearest way to decide is this:
Do you want the business decisions, such as which truck to operate, how to navigate slower freight periods, and when to invest in maintenance, to be yours to make? Or would you rather focus entirely on driving while someone else handles those responsibilities?
Both are valid career paths. The difference comes down to the level of responsibility, independence, and day-to-day role that best aligns with your goals.
