Georgia Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) – Step-by-Step Instructions
Before beginning Roehl Transport’s Paid CDL Training Program in Conley, Georgia, you’ll need to obtain your Georgia Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). Your CLP allows you to legally operate a commercial motor vehicle while supervised by a CDL holder and is the first step toward earning your Class A CDL.
Step 1: Review the Georgia CDL Manual
The Georgia CDL Manual includes everything you need to prepare for the CLP knowledge tests. Download it from the Georgia DDS – Commercial Drivers page or pick up a printed copy at any DDS location.
Focus your study on:
- Section 1 – Introduction
- Section 2 – Driving Safely
- Section 3 – Transporting Cargo
- Section 5 – Air Brakes
- Section 6 – Combination Vehicles
Step 2: Pass a DOT Physical
You must pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical conducted by a medical examiner listed in the FMCSA’s National Registry.

After passing, you’ll receive a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT card). Be ready to provide this to the DDS(Department of Driver Services) .
Step 3: Gather Required Documents
Bring the following to the DDS when you apply for your CLP:
- Proof of identity and U.S. citizenship or lawful presence
- Proof of Georgia residency (two documents)
- Social Security Number (card or W-2)
- Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT card)
- Payment for applicable fees
Step 4: Take Required Knowledge Tests
At your local DDS office, you’ll need to pass the following knowledge tests to receive your CLP:
- General Knowledge Test – Safe driving practices, vehicle operation, and regulations
- Air Brakes Test – Required if you plan to operate vehicles with air brakes
- Combination Vehicles Test – Required for tractor-trailer operations

Georgia CLP Guide – Your First Step to a CDL
Before beginning Roehl Transport’s Paid CDL Training in Conley, Georgia, you’ll need a Georgia Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). With your CLP, you can practice driving a commercial truck alongside a licensed CDL driver. This is the starting point toward your Class A CDL.
Step 1: Review the Georgia CDL Manual
The Georgia CDL Manual contains the information you’ll need to pass your CLP tests. You can access it online through the Georgia DDS website or request a copy from your local DDS office.
