Passenger Policy Reminder

The ability for drivers to take a passenger with them over the road can be a great experience for both driver and passenger, and can be an eye opening experience for many passengers. Please remember, there are specific rules and regulations associated with our Passenger Program.

In accordance with FMCSA rules, in order for a passenger to be in the vehicle riding, that passenger must be approved by the motor carrier (Roehl Transport Inc.), the passenger must have signed a release, or the parent/guardian must sign for children above 10 years of age to 17 years of age.

The passenger must have a permit (authorization form) that is completed and approved by Roehl Transport Inc. with them at all times.

Under no circumstances is it ok for a passenger to operate the tractor, to help secure freight or take securement material off a load, open trailer doors and help in taking tarps off or rolling them up, or to be on a trailer or in a trailer at any time.

At no time do we allow more than one passenger in a vehicle at a time; there are no exceptions to this policy. Roehl has a requirement on how much time behind the wheel a driver must have before they are authorized to take a passenger with them, but also may restrict authorization due to weather or situations which call for no passengers.

All passenger authorizations must be approved by the driver’s FM and Safety. Once approved, and all paperwork and insurance completed, the passenger form will need to be retained by the passenger at all times and it must be available if a state official asks for it.

The Passenger Program is for the benefit of the CMV driver, but permission must be obtained before a passenger will be authorized. Additionally, Roehl has an age limit of at least 10 years old before an individual can ride as a passenger, and a passenger must be in good health, able to get in and out of the tractor safely and not require additional services when riding.  Some customers may restrict passengers from entering their facility, and it is a requirement for the driver to validate that passengers are authorized on a premise before they arrive.

Drivers who have limited experience, have received PIP within 90 days, or had recent safety events will not be authorized to take a passenger until the waiting period has been completed and the authorization is once again reinstated.

Note that a passenger authorization may be cancelled at any time and based on FMCSA rules, Roehl Transport Inc., can determine whether they will allow or not allow passengers.

If you have questions, please contact your FM. Make sure when authorized to take a passenger that you operate your vehicle in accordance with DOT rules and regulations, state and local laws, and follow The Roehl Way. Remember to hold safety as a value and drive to protect others.

Congratulations to our newest Maintenance Apprenticeship graduates!

From Jamie Tucker, Gary Maintenance Supervisor

We would like to welcome these graduates of our Apprenticeship Program to our Roehl Maintenance family; Jack Fashing, Trevor Hoffman, and Connor Almada.

These three have worked hard, going to school during the day and coming here to learn a skilled profession at night.

They have all agreed to stay on as full-time techs, and will be a great asset to our terminal and company.

I would like to take this time to say thank you to Phil Trierweiler and Jason Sims for making this program possible. We currently have seven of these grads working at our Gary Terminal, and we are as happy to have them as they are to learn and grow in the industry.

Reminders:

Back to School Safety

Over the next couple of months children all over the country will return to school.
That means more people in crosswalks going to and from school, children crossing or running across streets (even where there might not be a crosswalk), riding bikes to and from school, playing next to streets, and there will of course be more school buses on the roads.

Please watch this back to school safety message, and thank you for living our cornerstone value of Safety. Over the next couple of months children all over the country will return to school.
