Save the date! Companywide Safety Meeting/Opportunity - July 13th

Join us for a companywide safety meeting with two Wisconsin State Patrol Enforcement Officers on Tuesday, 7/13 starting at 6 pm.
In this free event, you will hear from Mark Barlar and John Seidl, who will cover regulatory topics and questions which could include:

  • Are you confused about the HOS (When can we use Personal Conveyance and Yard Move?)?
  • How does this Split Sleeper Berth Work?
  • How do I end up with a clean inspection during a roadside - TIPS? (Unsafe Driving, HOS, Vehicle Maintenance)?
  • What do you mean when the scale is open I have to stop?
  • What is the difference between an MVR and PSP? (Both are my resume - what do you mean?)
  • What are the requirements under the FMCSA regarding ill and fatigued driving? How do CSA violations impact me and how does all of this affect our company CSA? (What is CSA?)

This non-mandatory meeting (driving teammates can record this time as off-duty, and this topic will also be covered in the meeting) is open to all Roehl teammates, and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions, if you join the meeting live. If you are unable to attend, we’ll provide a recording of the meeting afterwards.

Promoting Women in Trucking Workforce Act

The Promoting Women in Trucking Workforce Act aims to support women in the trucking industry, and Roehl Transport is a proud supporter of the Women in Trucking Association, and a two-time winner of the Top Companies for Women to Work For in Transportation.

WAOW Channel 9 recently ran a story on The Promoting Women in Trucking Workforce Act and featured a quote from Roehl driving teammate Demetria Grayson. "For the women that are second-guessing it give it a shot, it's well worth it."

Demetria is a flatbed driver for Roehl and Trainer. She added, "I know it is looked upon as a dominant industry for men, but we also get a lot of help from being out here in this industry. So I encourage a lot of women to get into it."

Launching Multi-Factor Authentication
As many of you have seen in the news last month, the Colonial Pipeline was the target of a ransomware attack that caused them to shut down a major pipeline. This pipeline supplied about 45% of the fuel to the East Coast and caused significant disruption. This source of this attack was a single compromised password that was used to access their network remotely through a VPN. This account was not setup to utilize Multifactor Authentication (MFA), which allowed hackers easy access into the Colonial Pipeline network and systems.

As a company Roehl understands the need to continually grow and improve our approach to security and we have been working through a rollout of a security tool called Okta. Okta provides us with ability to implement MFA and password management throughout our systems.  We have currently rolled out the MFA and password management features to around 80 teammates, and soon all office teammates will be configured to utilize Okta. The MFA component of Okta provides a secondary layer of security for teammates who connect remotely using our VPN connection. The benefit to utilizing MFA is to provide a mandatory second authentication method, beyond just a password, before accessing our systems from outside of the office. Using the Okta Verify app on your phone allows you to acknowledge a sign in attempt and verify that you are the one who is really trying to log in.

If Colonial Pipeline had been utilizing MFA with the account that was compromised, it is very likely the attack would have been unsuccessful.  The user would have been prompted to verify the login attempt and would have realized that someone else was trying to access their account and access would have been denied. This attack illustrates how much damage can be done with a single compromised password and why we continue to focus on adapting our security strategy and ask that everyone remain vigilant.  Making sure our data and systems remain safe will take a TeamRoehl effort.
