May is Mental Health Month
The Benefits Exercise has on Mental Health
By: Tianna Voda
It is well known that exercise has a positive impact on a person’s long-term physical health, but what about the positive effects it has on mental health? Exercise can uplift your mood, enhance your sleep, and help you deal with stress, anxiety, depression, and more.
Exercise has many benefits that can improve your physical health and your physique, reduce your waistline, and add years to your life, but it’s not just about the muscle size and the aerobic capacity that motivates people to stay active.
Individuals that exercise on a regular basis tend to do so because it offers them a sense of well-being. When you exercise endorphins are being released. Endorphins are your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitters. If you are feeling down or alone, exercise can release more endorphins and boost your mood. Exercise can also make people feel more energetic through their day, have a better night’s sleep, have sharper memories, and feel more positive about who they are and their life. Exercise is a powerful and healthy medicine for many mental health challenges.
Research indicates that moderate amounts of exercise can have a profound positive impact on anxiety, depression, and ADHD. You don’t have to be a fitness extremist to earn the benefits; your age or fitness level doesn’t matter, you can learn how to use exercise as a tool to deal with mental health challenges, improve your energy levels and create a positive outlook on life.
Studies have shown that exercise can treat depression as effectively as antidepressant medication, with no side-effects. It relieves tension and stress, increase your physical and mental energy, and enhances well-being. It is also a natural and effective anti-anxiety treatment.
When you feel stressed do you notice how your body feels? When a person becomes stressed their muscles may tense up, especially in their face, neck, and shoulders, causing back or neck pain. They might even feel their chest tighten, a pounding pulse or muscle cramps. The continuation of these physical symptoms can lead to more stress, producing a violent cycle between your body and mind. Exercise can break this cycle, by relaxing your muscles and relieving the tension built up in your body.
Even if you aren’t suffering from a mental health challenge, exercise can still help boost your mood, outlook, and mental well-being. Exercise can supply you with a sharper memory and thinking, higher self-esteem, better sleep, more energy, and stronger resilience.
It is easier than you think to reap the benefits of exercise. You don’t need to train all hours of the day at the gym, sweat buckets, or run miles after miles to get the physical and mental health benefits exercise has to offer. You may have a busy life filled with work, family, and friends and finding the time to exercise for a couple hours can be difficult. Although it can be beneficial do exercise for a prolonged period of time, all it takes is 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week. You don’t have to suffer through intense exercise to get results, research shows that moderate exercise is best for most people. Moderate exercise can be when you are beathing heavier, but not out of breath or your body feels warmer as you move, but not overheating.
It can be hard to get started with exercise when you have a mental health challenge. If you have depression it can make you feel like it robbed you out of the energy and motivation you need to work out or social anxiety means you don’t want to be seen exercising at the gym or running outside. There are techniques that can allow you to not feel trapped by your mental health issue. First, start small, set attainable goals, and build them up from there. If you set your goals too high, it will leave you discouraged because you can’t reach them. Next, schedule workouts when your energy feels the highest. Maybe you don’t have energy right away in the morning, but later at night you do; that is when you should schedule time to work out. Focus on activities you enjoy when exercising. Any activity that gets you moving counts, so throw a frisbee, go for a walk with your dog or friend, or ride your bicycle around. Wear comfortable clothing and choose a setting that is calming or energizing. Reward yourself by promising yourself a small treat, a delicious smoothie, or an extra episode of your favorite TV show. Lastly, make exercise a social activity; invite a friend, loved one, or your children to exercise with you. It can make exercising more fun and enjoyable.
Exercise is a proven benefit of reducing mental health challenge. If you suffer from a mental health challenge, consider exercise as a healthy coping alternative.
