Experienced Truck Driver FAQs

Q: How much will I really make?
A: Experienced truck driving professionals are making between $50,000 - $82,500.

Q: How long is driver orientation? 
A: Experienced van or refrigerated drivers complete a four-day orientation. On the fourth day, you will be dispatched and start moving freight. Experienced flatbed or curtainside drivers complete a four-day orientation and then start cargo securement training before being dispatched.

Q: When do I get my first paycheck?
A: You’ll receive your paycheck the week following the completion of orientation. Depending on your financial institution, you will typically receive your paychecks on Thursdays or Fridays.

Q: When will I get my first home time?
A: You will typically be home within a week of your orientation. You’ll be able to pick up personal items you normally take on the road with you.

Q: How much experience do I need to drive for Roehl? 
A: To be considered an experienced driver, you will need 60,000 solo miles. We offer Advanced Training for drivers with 20,000-59,999 solo miles. If you have less than 20,000 miles, you’ll be considered an inexperienced driver and be eligible for our Phase Training program.

Q: What is the Your Choice Pay Plan? 
A: Your pay will be based on your experience level, division and fleet choice. We offer a pay plan unique to the industry. The Your Choice Pay Plan™ allows you to achieve higher levels of pay through higher levels of performance. You can earn a pay increase every quarter up to our top rate.

Q: What kind of benefits/insurance does Roehl offer? 
A: We offer health, dental, vision, life, disability, 401(k), profit sharing, vacation and holiday pay.

Q: What can I expect for Hometime? 
A: We offer a National Fleet where you’ll be out 11-14 days with 3 days at home. Our HOMEtime PLUS™ Fleets offer 14 days out with 7 days at home, 7 days out with 7 days at home or a rotation of 7 days out, 4 at home and 7 days out 3 at home. Our regional fleets have you home weekly. We also offer dedicated fleets in select areas.

Q: What is the passenger policy?
A: We recently enhanced our passenger policy!
As a professional driver, you may want your spouse, child, or someone else like a parent, brother, sister or friend to ride along in the truck with you. You can do that with Roehl!
A couple of callouts: as experienced truck driver, you become eligible to take a passenger after 90 days of employment, children must be 10 years of age to ride along, and there is a minimal fee for rider insurance.

Q: How many miles can I expect? 
A: All fleets range differently depending on the freight that is available at that time. Our goals range from 2,300 – 2,600 miles per week in the national fleets, 2,100 –2,300 for our regional fleets and 2,800 in the HOMEtime PLUS™ fleets.

Q: Where are your terminals located? 
A: Our main terminals are located in Marshfield, Wisconsin; Chicago (Gary, Indiana); Atlanta (Conley), Georgia; Dallas (Grand Prairie) Texas; Phoenix, Arizona; and Appleton, Wisconsin. We also offer drop yard locations throughout the country.

Q: What is your pet policy? 
A: Yes! You can bring your dog or cat with you on the road with our new Pet Passport Program.

Q: What type of equipment do you have? 
A: Our trucks are predominately Freightliner and International. We run van, flatbed, curtainside and refrigerated trailers.

Q: Do I have to go to New York City? 
A: Most likely not. Less than 1% of our freight goes into New York City. If that’s where your load takes you, you will be required to travel there, and you'll receive a $75 bonus for doing so. We've had a couple of memorable NYC loads recently - one of our teammates delivered the NBA All-Star Game flooring to Madison Square Garden. A flatbed teammate delivered a large piece of equipment that was using in the filming of the Russell Crowe movie Noah.

Q: Do you have a military recognition program?
A: Yes, the Roehl Honor Program™ gives military veterans recognition and lets them take advantage of their GI Bill monies at the same time through a two-year apprenticeship that has been approved by the U.S. Departments of Labor and Veterans Affairs. A Roehl Honor Program Specialist can provide you more details.

Q: Do you offer refresher training?
A: Yes, contact a Driver Employment Specialist to learn more about how you can use your experience.

Q: Does Roehl offer a lease purchase program?

Inexperienced Truck Driver FAQs

Q: What should I bring with me to Phase 1 training?
A: You should bring all of the documents required for you to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) and for you to complete an I-9 as required by the USCS–US Citizen and Immigration Service. Check the weather for your Phase 1 location so you dress appropriately.

Q: What can I expect while in training? 
A: Full days and a lot of new knowledge. Phase 1 training demands your complete attention and full effort. Watch this video to learn more.

Q: What do I need to bring to training?
A: This video explains our recommendations and suggestions for what you'll need for your training.

Q: When will I leave with a Driver Trainer?
A: You’ll head out with a Certified Driver Trainer after the Driver Skills Seminar. Our over-the-road Driver Trainers’ arrival times are dependent on freight movements.

Q: How am I paid while with my Driver Trainer? 
A: You are paid in half day increments. Less than 6 hours is counted as a half day and over 6 hours is counted as a full day.

Q: When can I get started?
A: To ensure that we are hiring qualified applicants, we have a thorough application process before scheduling orientation. This process may take up to two weeks before you can begin orientation. We suggest that you submit an application before you graduate from a CDL course to get the process started.

Q: Where is orientation located?
A: We hold orientation in Marshfield, Wisconsin; Appleton, Wisconsin; Chicago, Illinois; Atlanta, Georgia; Dallas, Texas; Phoenix, Arizona.

Q: What is the length of training?
A: Phase 1 is eight days. Phase 2 training is on the road with a Certified Driver Trainer for about to fifteen days.

Q: Do you provide transportation to orientation?
A: We provide transportation, lodging and two meals a day while you are in orientation.

Q: What will I be paid for training?
A: You will be paid $600 upon successfully completing orientation.

Q: When will my benefits start?
A: Your benefits will begin the first day of the month after 60 days from your hire date.

Q: Do I have to go to Canada?
A: Depending on the fleet you choose and the area you live in, you may be required to travel into Canada.

Q: Do you offer tuition reimbursement?
A: We will reimburse you up to $6,000 for tuition costs. You will need to provide a receipt showing the amount you paid for CDL school tuition.
