2014-10-02 Roehl Transport renovates terminal and adds $10s of millions in economic impact

Gary, IN – Roehl Transport recently completed a major renovation of their flagship Chicago Area Terminal. Roehl invested over $7.2 million into expanding and remodeling the facility, creating additional maintenance capacity, training resources, operational support and expanded driver services.

“We have a fleet of over 2,000 trucks, and more than half of them will pass through this terminal each week,” said Roehl Transport CEO Rick Roehl. He continued, saying the demands on this terminal will continue to grow “…as we grow our company. In fact, we have an immediate expansion goal of 150 more drivers by the end of the year. This terminal is at the heart of our operation. While others wait for the economy to improve, we’re growing and leading the way. This facility represents our commitment to our teammates and to the region.”

Roehl Transport is headquartered in Wisconsin and has over 2,500 employees. Roehl’s Chicago Area Terminal, located in Gary, Indiana, is the busiest of Roehl’s eight terminals around the country.

Greg Koepel, Roehl Transport Vice President of Workforce Development and Administration, said that currently over 465 employees work at or out of the location and the financial effects of the operation are great. “The calculus of the economic impact is complex. We can measure many of the direct payments such as employee wages, lodging, meals, parts, tires, taxes and millions of gallons of fuel for our trucks. That only tells part of the story. There are multipliers in effect – every dollar is worth several more to the regional economy.”

The expanded facility creates new opportunities. “We’ve got more driving and non-driving jobs, unique schedules for our maintenance technicians and room for growth in our operations department. Plus, we’ve added new-to-driving instructional capacity. Roehl’s been training student truck drivers for over 25 years, and we recently added two state-of-the-art driving simulators,” said Koepel.

The sheer size and scope of the facility is impressive. In an effort to better serve all those truck drivers, and accommodate all the new ones, Roehl completely renovated the driver facilities. Some of the driver comfort improvements include additional and larger showers, more bunkrooms, restrooms, and laundry facilities. There is a new driver lounge with nearly ten times the previous space, and a new computer lab that provides access to the internet, email and the company news and training website. Drivers appreciate that they have a convenient exercise room for working out. One phase of the renovation that is not quite completed is a large industrial kitchen that, in the near future, will offer food service for employees.

Roehl has also partnered with U.S. Oil and H.M.D. Trucking to install a GAIN Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Fueling Station adjacent to Roehl’s Chicago Area Terminal located along Interstate 80/90 in Gary, Indiana, an important east-west freight carrier route in the Midwest. GAIN is the compressed natural gas division of U.S. Oil. With space for eight CNG dispensers, the location is open for use by other companies and the general public, and is one of the largest CNG stations in the Midwest. Roehl currently runs several CNG trucks in the Midwest.

“The CNG partnerships and our Chicago Area Terminal renovations reflect our commitment to grow and develop the company in ways that will allow us to build on our more than 50-year history of success serving our customers,” noted Rick Roehl. “We’re happy to be in northwest Indiana and look forward to the next 50 years.”
